By the late 1970s, the remains of Maldon West station were well and truly overgrown and only accessible by a circuitous walk. The platforms and goods yard were separated by an under road tunnel, the bricked up northern portal and one of the platforms being visible here. The booking office was located above the portal at road level. The passenger service ended in 1939 and the last traffic passed through in 1959. The trackbed between Maldon West and Maldon East was finally claimed by the A414 town bypass and a roundabout now covers this site.
