Manual signaling reduced to its bare minimum is seen at Althorne on 13th November 1982. Situated on the line from Wickford to Southminster, this small frame operated the signals associated with the level crossing at the east end of Althorne station.
With no protection from the elements and a relatively frequent train service, we may assume the crossing keeper was of a particularly hardy type.
