A narrow gauge tunnel with standard gauge dimensions. The L&MVR was quite advanced in its thinking as it conveyed standard gauge wagons on narrow gauge transporters so the tunnel at Butterton had to be large enough to accommodate them. Although most of the branch trackbed is now a footpath and cycleway a short stretch from Wetton to Butterton also carries light road traffic. This section includes the tunnel, viewed here from the southern end. Butterton Halt was just on the north side at which point the road veers away again leaving the Manifold Valley Trail to be followed to Hulme End.
