Bespoke containers laden with woodchip wait to be hauled to the Baltic coast from this sawmill west of Borlange on the Malung branch line in Sweden. The containers are no less than 10'3 high (compared to a 9'6 limit in Britain), maximising the payload of material to be delivered to a rail-connected paper mill some 100 miles distant at Gavle. This view was taken in 1998 during a business visit to assess load-carrying methods for movement of woodchip from a proposed railhead on the Maxwelltown branch to the Shotton paper mill in north east Wales - a scheme which was abandoned when Shotton Paper switched from use of virgin fibre to 100% recycled material.
