Carstairs
The Glasgow portion of the 'postal' arriving at Carstairs in 1988 behind 86239 L S Lowry. Beyond is the Edinburgh portion brought in earlier by 47653. The trains will combine before heading south. Sadly, some 8 years later on 8 March 1996, at Rickerscote south of Stafford, no 86239, again hauling a TPO, was in collision with a derailed freight train. The accident led to the death of a Royal Mail sorter and injured 22 others. 86239 was withdrawn and subsequently cut up following the accident. See image 42543
