Lancaster Railway Carriage and Wagon produced rolling stock and trams from 1863 to 1908 when work was transferred to Ashburys in Derbyshire, later part of Metropolitan-Cammell. The Grade II listed building went on to produce armamaments during WWI and is still in business use alongside Caton Rd in Lancaster. The old Midland line from Lancaster Green Ayre to Wennington ran behind the complex. I understand the open veranda style coaches of the Knott End Railway, later used on the Wanlockhead branch, were built in this works.
