New York's Roosevelt Island Tramway in March 2014, with the borough of Queens on the far side of the East River, Manhattan behind the camera and the Queensborough Bridge on the right. Opened in 1976 to coincide with the development of low cost housing on the island, it replaced a trolley service that ran over the bridge with a stop in the middle from which passengers took an elevator down. Each car can carry 110 people. The island is linked to Queens via the Roosevelt Island Bridge and, since 1989, has had its own Subway station (one of the deepest on the network) served by the F train.
