Of the 21 active rail yards serving the New York Subway the largest is at Coney Island. Scheduled maintenance is carried out for some 800 cars, while heavy maintenance and overhaul for all 6,000 cars on the system is shared with the facility at 207th St. The 75 acre site was built in 1926 on former marshland that once separated Coney Island from Brooklyn.
