Number 2, the more northerly Woolley tunnel air shaft, sited alongside the M1 entry slip road from Woolley Edge northbound services, is of stone construction, unlike the original brick construction of what is the number 6 air shaft for the upside bore of Woolley tunnel, possibly having been rebuilt when the M1 was constructed in the late 1960s. A further stone built air shaft, number 5, for the downside bore, is sited just off the lorry parking area for the southbound services, just north of the Bramley Lane overbridge, whilst two further brick air shafts, numbers 7 & 8 have recently been located in dense woodland south of air shaft number 6.
