In the days before dedicated customer care, anxious passengers accost BR staff on the concourse at Norwich on 22nd July 1978. Train information used to be conveyed via an unreliable combination of chalked notices, randomly sited posters, small print departure boards (some near floor level), frequently incorrect DMU blinds and a garbled tannoy, so it was always advisable to ask anyone who looked 'official'. The four rail routes from Norwich radiated out north, east, south and west, so before the advent of on-train, and later mobile phones, a mistake could prove very stressful, both for the passenger and anyone waiting for them at their destination.
