The recently published Kenneth Gray image of Gresley A3 Pacific no 60037 Hyperion about to leave Hawick with an unidentified southbound train in the early 1960s has prompted a follow-up question. The first vehicle is SC82327E a non-corridor all-third to LNER diagram 57. The train could be the 2.36pm Edinburgh-Carlisle - published pics of this working in the early 1960s sometimes show an LNER non-corridor vehicle between the loco and the corridor set making up the rest of the train - can anyone explain why? (The practice seems to have ceased sometime prior to the summer 1962.)
