Opened in 1819 as the Waterloo Hotel, the building at 23 Waterloo Place was promoted as Edinburgh's 'first large scale hotel' with the strapline '...an establishment where strangers can see the manners of the people and mix with the society of the place'. The location was later to become, for many years, the Headquarters of the North British Railway Company. Now a category A listed building it has since reverted to its original use, this time under the name Apex Hotel, seen here on 14 April 2015. The Dugald Stewart Monument stands on Calton Hill in the right background.
