The 13:10 Waterloo to Exeter St. Davids (1V13) rolls through pleasant Devon countryside between Feniton and Whimple, where it was one of the few trains booked to stop. BRCW Type 3 No. 6540 is displaying the Southern Region route code for Waterloo - Exeter, although by the time of the photograph in 1972 the section of the former LSWR main line west of Salisbury was firmly in Western Region territory following the 1963 boundary changes.
