The Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway originally ran at street level through Coatbridge, which led to increasing congestion. In 1872 it was raised onto the bridge seen in the background, the Caley line is beyond. The Whitelaw Fountain, seen here in 2001, commemorates the new bridge and re-alignment. The fountain itself was relocated to aid traffic flow. Alexander Whitelaw of Baird & Co, owners of the Gartsherrie Ironworks whose trains were often delayed, was the instigator of the new line.
