Calderbank Viaduct

One of the two central piers remains of the double track Calderbank Viaduct which was closed to traffic around 1941 leaving Chapelhall at the end of a branch from Lanridge Junction. The viaduct passed over the Ballochney Railway's branch to Calderbank Steelworks and an extension of the Caley's Thankerton Colliery branch which served the Calderbank Steelworks and Chapelhall Ironworks. Calderbank station was behind the camera in an area now landscaped which has also removed the remains of a connecting line to Calderbank Steelworks. The Caley's Airdrie and Newhouse Branch was double track from Airdrie to Chapelhall, continuing single track to Newhouse and on as goods only to Lanridge Junction to meet the Drumbowie Branch from Omoa (now Cleland) station. The Legbrannock Railway was the first railway to the south east of Calderbank, connecting the Legbrannock Colliery to the Monkland Canal.
