With the opening of the Callander and Oban through to Oban in 1880, various new routes opened. A circular route from Oban to Achnacloich (train) to Lochetivehead (ferry) to Kingshouse (coach) to Ballachulish (coach) to Oban (ferry or train from 1903) became available to tourists. Variations of this existed prior to that date and the ferry from Achnacloich to Lochetivehead has continued intermittently since under various different operators.
The photograph is taken from close to a charcoal burning platform originally associated with the Glen Kinglass Iron Works and the view shows the disused pier looking north east. Inveretive and Glen Etive are in the background.
