Helensburgh Central

A depressing, wet February lunchtime at Helensburgh Central. No sign of the earlier snow remains. But what is the purpose of the striped pole in the foreground?

The 'pole' is a marker post that a train must pass to allow it to reverse. See this link and scroll down to the second last row of images.

I think the pole is a stop marker for trains, so that their automatic couplers don't come into contact with the buffer stops.
