Some years ago, maintenance workers discovered that the base of one of the towers of the Clifton Suspension Bridge was hollow. Exploration (requiring abseiling) revealed a series of vast vaults on several levels. Two of these are now open for occasional public tours and we were lucky to be on one today.
For a railway connection; the Bristol to Portishead branch is directly (but a couple of hundred feet) below.
