Park Halt

Peckett and Sons 0-4-0ST No 2003 John Blenkinsop hauls two preserved coaches up the incline towards Park Halt on the Middleton Railway Trust's line from Moor Road depot in Hunslet. This is the world's oldest continuously operating public railway. Its origin can be traced back to a waggonway authorised by Act of Parliament from 1758 to take coal from the pits at Middleton to a staith at Casson Close near the River Aire in Leeds. It is 205 years since steam locomotives were first used here on the initiative of the colliery Viewer, John Blenkinsop, who introduced a rack and pinion system with iron edge rails.
