Volklingen Iron Works in the Saarland region of southern Germany, near the French border, is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The works closed in 1986 but is now a fascinating museum. Although this works is closed, there is still an iron works in Volklingen and the molten iron ore is transported in these torpedo wagons to the nearby steel works. The wagons stop under the outlet from the blast furnace and the molten iron runs directly in to each, as the furnace is tapped.
