I think this must be the earliest photograph to appear on RailScot, though it is really a photo by proxy as despite appearances I wasn't around in 1845. It was taken by pioneering photographer David Octavius Hill and appeared in the now-closed exhibition 'Trains, Planes and Automobiles' at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. There wasn't a great deal of nerdy rail interest in this exhibition, but I don't want to sound too much like the Field and Stream reviewer of Lady Chatterley's Lover who didn't think there wasn’t enough gamekeeping detail.
