The Polmaise branch served the collieries at Millhall (Polmaise 1 and 2) and Fallin (Polmaise 3 and 4). The coal traffic from Fallin ended in the early 1980s at a time of prolonged unrest in the mining industry (Millhall had closed in the 1950s). This photo was taken on the disused branch close to the main line, which is behind the camera, in August 1986. Fallin colliery was being modernized then in the expectation that production would resume, but it was closed completely the next year. The derelict building visible was once part of a weighbridge installation for coal trucks. After removal of the track, this location became densely wooded. Further on, the track bed between the sites of Millhall and Fallin collieries was made into a footpath.
