An excerpt from a small map of the Edinburgh area which shows the 4' 6' gauge Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway and its branches with the main line extending as far south as Arniston via the Marquis of Lothian's Waggonway between Newtongrange and Gorebridge. South of South Esk station the waggonway alignment was to the east of the later railway terminating at the Newbyres Colliery, Arniston. There is no sign of the East Coast main line which opened in 1846 but on the left side of the map (not illustrated) the Edinburgh Glasgow railway (opened 1842) is shown. This small map pre-dates the 1852 surveying for the first edition of the OS for this area by which time the line had been bought by the NBR, rebuilt and extended southwards.
