The Carberry Colliery branch had a trailing junction south of Monktonhall and crossed Carberry Road at this point, half way up the brae between Inveresk and Crossgatehall stations. The gateposts on the other side of the road, photographed by Douglas Blades in 1971, have unsurprisingly gone but one remains here on the east side. Mary Queen of Scots' forces were repelled here in 1567. I was not too impressed myself.
