One of the gates at Sunnyside level crossing on the 'Nickey Line' near Beaumont's Halt on 7th August 1976. Industrial traffic was still running then to and from the Hemelite factory at Claydale sidings, but despite the warning signs it seems the gates were left open permanently. I had to disentangle this one from vegetation to swing it shut for the photo. Hemelite had been responsible for operating the line since 1968 and received several reprimands from British Rail over safety matters up until final closure in 1979 when BR severed the connection to the main line at Harpenden.
