The 'up' platform at Hurst Green station in East Sussex, seen from 377163 with 377160 calling at the 'down' with a Southern service from London Victoria to East Grinstead, on 6th May 2013. Just south of here the line to East Grinstead continues south while that to Uckfield diverges to the south-east before turning south and then south-west. The latter, of course, used to continue through to Lewes until the senseless closure of the Uckfield to Lewes section in January 1969, robbing the Brighton Main Line of an alternative route to London at times as happened recently when the main line was closed between Brighton and Three Bridges for a week. Part of the old line at Isfield is now a short heritage railway designated The Lavender Line.
