Limehouse

Unidentified DLR unit heading east along Limehouse Viaduct between Limehouse and Westferry stations, crossing the start of the Regent's Canal with Limehouse Basin, formerly known as Regent's Canal Dock, beyond on 7th June 2008. The viaduct was opened by the London & Blackwall Railway in 1840 but closed to passengers in 1926 and to freight in 1962. It lay disused until 1987 when it was utilised by one of the first two sections of the DLR. It is now a Grade 1 Listed Structure by English Heritage. The year 2020 also marks the bi-centenary of the Regent's Canal that opened in 1820 to link the Grand Junction Canal at Paddington with the Thames at Limehouse. Both canals were amalgamated in 1929 to form the Grand Union Canal but the Regent's Canal is still known colloquially by its original name.
