A view south-east along the Whelley Viaduct over the River Douglas to the east of Wigan on 15 January 2012. The line ran from Standish Jct on the WCML (north of Wigan) to Bamfurlong Jct on the WCML (South of Wigan). The line allowed freight to bypass Wigan North Western however the line closed around the time of the electrification of the WCML. In 2012 the viaduct still stood although there was significant deterioration to the brickwork on some columns as can be seen on the one nearest to the camera.
