I can't find any corroboration, but I've always believed these substantial bollards on The Mound were put there to prevent any runaway tram leaving the tracks on this sharply falling curve and landing on the railway below. In 1929 a tram coming down steep Liberton Brae ended up overturned in someone's garden. Nobody was seriously hurt, but I believe some Dahlias needed counselling. Photographed incidental to my daily exercise permitted under emergency coronavirus legislation.
