1909 OS map extract of the lines around Farington and Lostock Hall, including the locomotive depot that survived into the early 1970s. See image 25579. The complex network of curves and triangles was very flexible and it was common practice for trains between Blackpool and Scotland to be routed through Farington Curve, Lostock Hall and the East Lancashire line back into Preston to avoid the need for run round in busy Preston station.
