One of three alternative proposals for the new transport interchange at Haymarket published in 2007 involved demolition of the A-listed station building and its two adjacent hostelries, Ryries and The Caledonian Alehouse. Result - universal outrage. The final plan saw the station building receive a modern extension, with one of the pubs surviving unscathed. The loser was The Caledonian Alehouse, remains of which lie beyond the metal barriers on 7 April 2009. In the background, between the buses on Haymarket Terrace and the station building, stands Ryries, doubtless breathing a sigh of relief. For the original layout see 16520.
