A Scottish railway in Africa. This is an aerial view of the concentrating mills 2 and 3 at the Marampa Mine, Sierra Leone in 1960. William Baird & Co, of the Gartsherrie Iron Works, was heavily involved in the development of this mine in the 1930s to secure an ongoing iron ore supply once local supplies were exhausted. At the bottom of the view is the railway which ran west 52 miles to Pepel Island where an associated bulk loading pier was built. The railway was a 3ft 6in.
