LUL 1995 stock arriving at Balham station in south London with a Northern Line service to Morden, on 10th November 2012. Opened in 1926, this was the scene of a WWII disaster on 14th October 1940. Underground stations were used as air raid shelters and usually provided a safe environment but, on this occasion, a bomb landed on the pavement above causing a crater into which a bus crashed. The impact caused the northbound platform tunnel to collapse and the station was flooded from fractured water mains and sewers which flowed into the southbound platform tunnel, seen here. 66 shelterers were killed and 72 injured, closing the line between Trinity Road (renamed Tooting Bec in 1950) and Clapham Common. However, the damage was repaired fairly quickly and this section reopened on 12th January 1941. (NB: The Company caption is incorrect, it should be City & South London Railway (Morden Extension)).
