Heap Bridge was the terminus of a short branch from the Bury to Castleton line, now the East Lancashire Railway. It never saw passenger services but was kept busy with general goods traffic until 1967. The nearby Yates and Duxbury's paper mill received coal supplies by rail along the branch until 1973 and was steam worked until closure 33206. The goods shed survives in 2021 as a tile and bathroom retail outlet.
