Blackfriars

The 2012 south side entrance to London Blackfriars, seen on 11th May 2021. This station was opened by the LCDR on 10th May 1886 as St. Pauls. The Metropolitan District Railway opened its station below here on 30th May 1870 but which was named Blackfriars. Not until 1st February 1937 was the ex-LCDR station renamed Blackfriars to correspond with the Underground station and, at the same time, Post Office station on the LU Central Line was renamed St. Pauls. Blackfriars was rebuilt in 1977 and then again in 2012, following completion of work that had begun in 2009. The new station spans the whole of the Thames bridge from north to south, this south side entrance opening on 20th February 2012.
