Edinburgh Waverley

D6851 and D6817 prepare for departure from Waverley on 11th May on a Dingwall to Corbridge charter. Before hauling the last northbound Anglo-Scottish freight over the Waverley Route on 4th January 1969, D6851 had a busy previous day, as described in 'Waverley Route: the battle for the Borders Railway:' Demonstrating a degree of operational efficiency which may come as a surprise to some advocates of today's privatised railway [D6851 worked] the 09.05 Millerhill-Kingmoor, returning on the 12.40 Kingmoor-Millerhill, then hauling the 20.10 Millerhill-Kingmoor, before completing an intensive day's work at the head of the 23.45 Kingmoor-Millerhill. More than 30 different locomotives (of nine different classes) worked through Hawick during the last three days of the Waverley Route. Surprisingly, over and above D6851, at least a further three have survived the breaker's torch: D1778 (47579), D5311 (26011) and D6846 (37146).
