Bathgate Yard

Memories of Rennies Bridge. The bridge stood just east of Bathgate station, overlooking the STVA car terminal (18357). It linked Edinburgh Road with the south side of the line (77175). (Even from old maps its hard to see a specific purpose; latterly it ran out in a wooded area to the east of Bathgate golf course.) While I visited it on many occasions over the years, I only ever saw it used by dog walkers and the odd railway photographer (no offence Jim). The side walls and parapets on the bridge and its lengthy approaches incorporated a fascinating range of materials including stonework, wire mesh, shrubbery, wooden fencing, concrete blocks, plate girders, nettles, brickwork, metal slats etc ... etc. The structure was sadly demolished in May 2008 during electrification of the Airdrie - Bathgate - Edinburgh route. For a view of the bridge itself see 18542.
