In the foyer of the SNPG is this John Hutchison bust of Charles Maclaren FRSE FGS founding Editor of the Scotsman newspaper and one-time President of the Edinburgh Geological Society. However the wee plaque does not mention his enthusiastic prediction of the importance and promotion of railways as this obviously does not fit into the gallery's agenda: portraying only the perceived 'great and good' of contemporary 'culture'. Thus the art on display could not possibly involve anything to do with the industrial revolutionaries, whether ordinary working folk (men, women and children), monied investors, millworkers, miners or merchants who were producing the wealth to fund the culture of the time or so it seems....
