Denmark Hill, looking towards Victoria from the footbridge, on 6th August 2021. The splendid entrance building on the bridge, dating from the 1860s, was badly damaged by fire in 1980 and, of course, BR wanted to demolish it. However, a campaign spearhead by Sir John Betjeman, a great lover of railways, and a great hero of mine and with local residents, managed to stop the demolition gangs and the building was saved and restored. It now partly functions as a ticket office but the main part is now The Phoenix pub/restaurant - and very nice in there it is too!
