Goschenen

In August 1966, a lengthy freight completes the climb of the northern ramp of the Gotthard behind Ae 8/14 'double-locomotive' 11851. This was one of three experimental prototypes built in the nineteen thirties. All became Gotthard classics. 11851 was built in 1932 and handled heavy passenger and freight work on the route over the next forty years. The cab-ends were rebuilt in 1962 to give an external appearance similar to the then modern Ae 6/6s that had recently become the mainstay of Gotthard traction. In fact an Ae 6/6, number 11404 Luzern, can be seen further down the train, having acted as a Zwischenlok ('between' locomotive) to give extra power for the climb.
