Sanquhar
The summer Saturday 6.40am Birmingham – Glasgow, heading north near Sanquhar behind Jubilee 4-6-0 45697 'Achilles', in the course of a rather frustrating journey. Delays around Carlisle had cost 15 minutes, but the Jubilee was running extremely well and would certainly have made up time. Almost every time we got going at express speed, however, we ran into adverse signals for slower trains in front - altogether twelve signal checks, six of which were to a dead stand.
