The up platform at Elsenham station in north Essex, on the Cambridge main line, seen here looking north in pre-electrification days, in October 1979. In 1913, this became the junction for the Elsenham & Thaxted Light Railway, which terminated seemingly in the middle of nowhere in a field, well outside the delightful historic Essex market town of Thaxted. The branch closed in 1952 after less than 40 years of operation; the Thaxted branch platform was to the right of the platform seen here and there were still some remains of it in 1979. I haven't been to this station for years so I don't know if the remains are still there in 2022. The Thaxted station site was still identifiable in 1979 too, then an industrial estate, but again I've no idea if this is still the case,
