Stockport

View from UK Railtours' excursion from London Euston to Leeds City heading north along Stockport Viaduct, a landmark for miles around, on Saturday, 12th February 2022. This massive structure was built for the Manchester & Birmingham Railway and crosses 111 ft. above the valley of the River Mersey (See image 33400). It was begun in 1839 and, despite needing 11 million bricks and with 29 spans, opened as a double-track viaduct in December 1840. It was widened to four tracks in the 1880s with the electrification masts going up in 1966. The viaduct has been a Grade II Listed Structure by English Heritage since 1975.
