25 March 1967 and the 'Grand Tour No 1' is well under way, having reached Perth, where diesels D1973 and D368 are being replaced by steam locos 44997 and 60009 'Union of South Africa'. The crew of the Class 47 look on with bemusement at the number of onlookers. Two locos were necessary because of the sheer length of the train - 18 coaches! An exhilarating run followed, with 80mph at Stonehaven and a hair raising 75mph on the subsequent curves between there and Aberdeen.
