Causey Arch

A reproduction of one of the early horse-drawn wooden wagons once used to transport coal between collieries in western County Durham and the coast. Approximately 900 such wagons crossed the Causey Arch on the Tanfield Railway every day during its heyday. This one stands at the south end of the arch. Built in 1725/1726, the Causey Arch is the world's oldest surviving single-arch railway bridge (see image 41815).
