Coborn Road [2nd]

The former entrance to Coborn Road station in east London, on the ex-GER main line into and out of Liverpool Street, seen here on 3rd August 2013. This station was opened on 1st February 1865 as Old Ford and renamed Coborn Road on 1st March 1879 and then re-sited slightly to the west on 2nd December 1883. As part of transport economies during WWI, Coborn Road, Globe Road and Bishopsgate Low Level, along with Cambridge Heath and London Fields stations on the Enfield Town line, were closed on 22nd May 1916. Globe Road and Bishopsgate Low Level never reopened but Coborn Road, Cambridge Heath and London Fields were reopened on 5th May 1919. The latter two are still open today but Coborn Road closed permanently on 8th December 1946, five days after the first stage of the opening of the eastern extension of the LUL Central Line from Liverpool Street to Stratford rendered it redundant. The main line platforms at the ex-GER Bethnal Green station also closed on the same day, superseded by the opening at the same time of the nearby LUL Central Line station.
