Pontcysyllte Aqueduct on the Llangollen Canal consists of a cast iron trough 3.7m wide and 1.6m deep supported on iron arched ribs carried on 18 hollow masonry piers. The canal was briefly owned by the LNWR and was formally closed to navigation by the LMS in 1944 but its status as a water feeder to the Shropshire Union Canal was maintained. It was restored to navigable use in the latter half of the 20th century.
