The Lancaster Canal bridges were numbered from early days, if not the start of operations in 1797. Bridge 1 was in Preston and Bridge 188 in Kendal. Later bridges were given A and B numbers. Bridge 129B (almost a box tunnel really) from the 1960s takes the canal under the M6 just to the north of Junction 35. Going south the canal was diverted from its original route to pass under the M6 at right angles and then turn sharp left on a new section until the original route is reached.
