Wigan Junction, fairly close to the town centre, is where the main line of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal meets the Leigh Branch. This runs south for seven miles to join the Bridgwater Canal at Leigh. At one time this junction would have been teeming with working boats, mainly carrying coal. This October 2022 view looks south along the branch canal. The start of the long Wigan Flight of locks is off camera to the left and the main canal to Liverpool goes right at this point.
