From 1866 until 1929 passengers arriving at Ardrishaig on one of the Clyde steamers were transported through the Crinan Canal for onward passage north on a steamer called the TSS 'Linnet'. With a capacity of 270 passengers the vessel only operated for four months during the summer. Out of season the 'Linnet' was kept in a boathouse adjacent to Lock 9. The roofless shell remains as a monument to the days when the canal was used for passage of passengers and goods rather than just leisure craft like those seen in Lock 9 behind the building. The 'Linnet' was sold to the Glasgow Motor Boat Racing Club who moored her as a clubhouse at Shandon in the Gareloch where she met a sad end, wrecked in a storm in January 1932. See image 70724 for a photograph of the 'Linnet'.
